Oral history

Oral history project

Over a decade ago, we undertook the first phase of an oral history project to record the reminiscences of women involved in setting up the first Rape Crisis Centres in Scotland.

In 2009, we published Woman to Woman, An Oral History of Rape Crisis in Scotland 1976-1991, in which 39 women recount their experiences of the first 15 years of listening to, supporting, and learning from survivors in Scotland.

These powerful accounts of collective action vividly describe their dedicated efforts to help survivors cope and heal, the skills and knowledge that grew from this, and the birth of the centres they created and developed.

Our efforts to preserve this unique piece of feminist history continue, with a second phase of our Oral History Project now under way.
