Everyone deserves to be safe, supported and free from violence

A short statement following the devastating scenes across central Scotland last night:

Our thoughts are with Stephen Ogilvie and his family after the horrific attack against him.

This was an appalling act of violence which is impossible to comprehend.

What is just as difficult to understand is the senseless violence which has followed it.

Last night families in Belfast, including a two-month-old baby, were forced to flee their homes as rioters set fire to them.

In Scotland, masked men attacked people living in our communities based on the colour of their skin. 

This was a dangerous, calculated attempt to exploit personal tragedy.

Everyone deserves to be safe, supported, and free from violence and abuse, regardless of their background or where they come from.

There is no place for violence and intimidation on our streets.

We stand in solidarity with everyone who has been affected by the devastating scenes last night.

We reject the hatred, fear and misinformation which divides our communities and poses a danger to us all.
